The Dollar Board™ is a complete curriculum to teach children to count money, concretely and independently. It was first developed in 2007 following the need to find a way to help children learn the value of money and the best way to understand the concept of counting it.
It began as a curriculum with 13 lessons, songs, and handwriting sheets based on the Montessori material called The Hundreds Board. The idea for the app began a couple of years ago when the thought arose to make the curriculum available to the wider public, and is educationally rated for children age 3 and up.
The child will first learn the value of each coin along with the coin layouts. There are songs that correlate to the nickels, dimes, and quarters. Once those levels have been completed, there are levels which begin by counting pennies. The next levels include counting nickels and pennies. Following those are levels for counting dimes, nickels, and pennies. Then there is the practice for counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Finally, there are random combinations of coins that will solidify the knowledge of counting coins.
